Open Plans Statement on City of Yes committee vote
Statement from Sara Lind, Co-Executive Director at Open Plans:
"While cities across the country are fully lifting parking mandates, the New York City Council chose to be less bold. This version of City of Yes is certainly a historic shift for New York’s zoning code; the Land Use Committee has designated the largest parking mandate-free district in the country and significantly lowered the number of required parking spots in areas where mandates still exist, which will help create much more urgently needed housing. That said, this was a once-in-a-generation chance and we believe far too many New Yorkers still live in car dependence and transit deserts that are caused in part by parking mandates.
"We’re grateful to the tireless work of the Department of City Planning and strong advocates in the City Council who weren’t afraid to put a stake in the ground for a more livable future. There’s no doubt that parking mandates were lifted in some neighborhoods and greatly reduced in others due to the support of our many strong allies, including everyday New Yorkers who value walkability, affordability, and density above space for cars. We’re disappointed that it has once again proven so difficult for our leaders to stand boldly against car dominance, even as some Councilmembers bemoan their districts’ lack of safe streets and transit options. Today we celebrate this incremental victory; New Yorkers need every Councilmember to vote yes and pass this text amendment at the final vote. And tomorrow, we get back to work."
