Open Plans statement on the start of congestion pricing
Statement from Sara Lind, co-executive director of Open Plans, on the start of congestion pricing in New York City:
“The start of congestion pricing is without a doubt a victory for every New Yorker. This common sense, long overdue policy has worked in other cities and will work for us here. Whether you’re a bus rider frustrated with commute times, a pedestrian navigating a hectic Central Business District, or a driver stuck in traffic, congestion pricing is the right thing to do. We’re grateful to the many advocates, elected officials, and everyday New Yorkers whose support of congestion pricing has given us the ability to create a greener, safer, and healthier future.
“Car ownership and driving are on the rise, a troubling trend that could spell disaster for our future as a livable, accessible, and resilient city. Every New Yorker, even drivers, should want people to think twice before they choose driving over another transit mode. Congestion pricing will help do that and help ensure those other modes are more appealing and reliable.
“But this program cannot succeed without a holistic strategy, especially now that the toll has been reduced. The City must pair congestion pricing with other proven policies that get people out of cars, as well as track and publicize the program’s impact on our streets so we know how it’s working and how to improve it. Specifically, we urge the City to pursue Bus Rapid Transit, Low Traffic Neighborhoods, a more robust bike lane network, and street parking reforms alongside congestion pricing. This approach will ensure the toll is as effective as possible and will give New Yorkers the best chance at a safer, greener, less car-clogged and chaotic city where everyone can get where they’re going with ease.”
